German Floods – How does it impact holiday homes in Germany?
There’s no question – our climate is changing and part of that process is the occurrence of more frequent major ‘weather events’ such as the recent flooding in Germany. 2021 has seen some of the most catastrophic flooding in Europe in living memory, causing major damage and sadly, hundreds of deaths, the majority of those in Germany.
The flooding started in July and, rather than being a ‘one-off’ event, has carried on throughout the summer, wreaking havoc on the German economy and causing major structural damage in some of the country’s most picturesque and beautiful regions.
For Germany, the floods have been the worst natural disaster since the North Sea Flood of 1962, with at least 177 people losing their lives, widespread power loss in the North Rhine-Westphalia, and fundamental damage to infrastructure including roads and rail links. The rainfall was so high that some areas received an average of an entire month’s rain in a single day.
Along with the loss of life came substantial damage to property, including holiday homes in Germany. For holiday home owners across Europe, this was a worrying time.
Fortunately, Intasure has provided cover for EU clients for nearly 20 years, and our team are familiar with similar the issues that some German customers face during this unprecedented weather event. As soon as communications were re-established with affected areas, our customers immediately got in touch to ask for our help.
Mobilising our team on the ground
As soon as roads were passable, we contacted our local loss adjusters and coordinated teams in specialist areas to move in and assist getting the ball rolling. Their first job was to assess the level of damage our German customers had experienced to their property, and to help them get the support they needed. Once properties were secured and we knew our customers were safe, we initiated the claims process so that it was as simple and as stress-free as possible.
Not our first time…
This isn’t our first time assisting with a major weather event. In recent years, we’ve been there for our customers no matter what, whether it was hurricanes in Greece, earthquakes in Turkey, or floods in Spain. We draw on that experience and deploy our expertise over to a new location, adapting and fine-tuning our strategies to cope with the unpredictability of major events.
At Intasure, we also manage the claims process internally from start to finish with a team of experienced claim handlers. During a time when our customers need to rebuild their properties (occasionally, quite literally from the ground up), the last thing they need is to be passed from one claims handler to another. By keeping our customers informed at every stage, and by ensuring that they always have a single point of contact they know they can trust, we can deliver a better, more streamlined service with a higher level of customer care.
A little bit of care
And if there’s one thing we know our customers need when they’re dealing with a life-changing event like the German floods, it’s a little bit of care. We know that insurance companies don’t always seem to be the most approachable of institutions, but at Intasure, we do things a little differently. Not only do we tailor specialist insurance for holiday homes in Germany (as we do for other countries), we genuinely care about each and every one of our customers. For some of our German clients, their holiday homes are their main source of income, so it’s imperative that we get them back up and operational as quickly as possible.
What is next?
The German flooding could be a one-off event, or it could be something that happens more frequently, forcing some of us to look again at how we live our lives. One thing is certain, though, and that’s Intasure will continue to deliver the support and assist our customers need to cope with life’s emergencies. Providing holiday home cover across the EU (including our specialist Nordic solution for customers who reside in the EU), we will continue to support families, business, and holiday home owners throughout the EU, no matter what the weather throws at us.
