So where do you start?
Start with something simple, open the windows to get some fresh air and put on some nice music while you enjoy this traditional annual task at home.
Here are some tips to keep your home clean, whether you’re a homeowner or renter. Regular maintenance will keep your property in good order for the coming months and it might make you feel overall happier and healthier in a fresh environment.
Spring cleaning tips for the bedroom
The bedroom is generally a place for relaxing and resting. You can start with the laundry and taking down curtains to wash. Don’t forget to replace the bedding, comforters, pillows and duvets with fresh bedding. Some people use this opportunity to turn the mattress at this time of the year.
Wardrobes and chests of draws are important areas to check. Maximizing the space in your wardrobe is always a plus if you pack away seasonal clothing that may be taking up needed space. Some people prefer to get rid of some clothes all together, including accessories, jewellery, outwear or shoes. It may seem pretty obvious, but if you’ve never worn a piece of clothing or you’re not sure whether you’ll wear it again, then why not donate it?
Finally, use a mop or vacuum cleaner and don’t be tempted to skip around pieces of furniture or the bed. You might have to think about moving all of them if it’s necessary to access to all corners.
Time required: approx. 1 – 2 hours depending on the size of your room.
Kitchen cleaning tips
What is the first thing you think needs to be done in the kitchen? Cleaning the oven can be a cleaning challenge. Remove the trays and soak them in hot water and a little washing up liquid. With a clean cloth, sponge off any remaining cleaner and dirt on the oven, and then dry. If you prefer to opt in for eco-friendly cleaning products, the best products to use are baking soda in place overnight and vinegar with water to wipe.
Two extra tips worth considering to help make cleaning your oven easier in the future:
1. Before cooking something in the oven, line the oven tray with foil to prevent future splits
2. Make sure you always clean the glass screen after cooking
Keep cupboards regularly clean and tidy, make sure you take all items out so you can have a good thorough clean and avoid unpleasant visitors, such as spiders, which tend to hide in those dark and warm areas.
Consider washing walls, ceiling and lamps, and remember to clean air vents, doorknobs, and switch plates too. Cooking brings a lot of hidden dirt everywhere in the room.
Time required: approx. 2 – 3 hours.
Bathroom cleaning tips
This room might not require so much attention as part of your spring cleaning. Keeping the bathroom clean and hygienic is normally a must do throughout the year. The dry weather could help you to avoid mould, damp or condensation on walls and the ceiling. Some local governments provide recommendations of how to keep your home free from damp, condensation and mould. You can find out more information here.
You can replace the chemical products by using neat white vinegar or lemon juice applied with a sponge works for limescale.
Time required: approx. 30 minutes – 1 hour.
Living room cleaning
Similar to the bedroom, you might think about washing the cushions (filling and covers) and throws. Take a look at lamps, photo frames and bookshelves in case they need dusting and the last step is vacuuming the floor.
Time required: approx. up to 1 hour.
Window cleaning
Here’s an old-fashioned method to helping you clean your windows that doesn’t require costly cleaner products, and the ingredients are easily found in most of kitchen cupboards:
- Fill a spray bottle with water and pop two tablespoons of white vinegar.
- Spray your window with this solution and use balled-up newspapers, wiping in circular motion, and then vertical motions.
- Newspaper is better at avoiding streaks than kitchen roll or another kind of cloths.
Carpet cleaning
If your carpets and rugs are dirty and your vacuum isn’t powerful enough, it might be time to call a professional or alternatively you might decide to rent a carpet cleaning machine. How do you remove carpet stains? The best tip we’ve learnt from Cleanipedia is to clean them immediately with vinegar, dish soap and water, and leave this moisture soaking for 5-10 minutes. After this time, proceed to clean it with a dry towel. This process is not so good for some type of stains. For example, pollen. The best way to remove pollen from the carpets is with a piece of self-adhesive film to adhere to small amounts from the top without pushing them down.
